Technical Writing - Draft 2
Proposed Solutions.
Creating awareness through the use of media outlets
The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) should create more awareness through various means of publicity. Although there are various green technologies available, many individuals are still choosing known and traditional green technologies.
The team’s proposed solution is to increase awareness of green technologies through social media platforms and advertising as a start, followed by road shows that deepen the community’s knowledge through the showcase of such green technologies. A short informative video can be made and shown in trains and lift lobbies to showcase the various types of green technologies and the energy savings it can bring.
SMRT is one of the organisations that benefitted through usage of both tradition and new media platforms. Throughout its Rail Transformation Journey, commuters became increasingly keen of the key programmes. Acknowledgement was given to the organisation and the commuters recognized that it was working hard to repair the network. (Nathan, P. Peh, Y.T. 2017)
Increased efforts towards collaboration between technology providers, building developers, consultants and owners.
The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) should improve their collaboration platform for the various stakeholders. Although there are efforts towards bringing the various stakeholders together, many are still unaware of available grants and products available in the market.
The team’s proposed solution is to improve the overall collaboration across all parties, starting from the government. More articles can be published covering the various grants or subsidies for green technologies for businesses to tap from.
Incentives towards home owners that actively apply green technologies in their homes.
The Building and Construction Authority should collaborate with both the Housing and Development Board and People’s Association to provide incentives towards home owners that actively partake in the integration of green technologies in their homes resulting in energy savings.
The team’s proposed solution is to hold events in the various communities to reward homeowners that partake in the transition towards green technologies. Homeowners will track their energy savings through their monthly utilities bills and submit a copy to the Residents’ Committee with photos of the integrated green technology such as use of LED lights instead of the traditional fluorescent lights. The Residents’ Committee will then compare these savings according to similar roomed flats and determine the one with the most savings.
Having a green mentality at home will translate directly to work, homeowners may be managers, engineers, teachers and more. Social proof is defined as actions influenced by other actions. (Cialdini, R. 1984) When peers at school or colleges hear about the changes and benefits that green technologies bring and is increasingly becoming the norm. Homeowners that have not integrated such technologies will feel left out, or stand out from the rest. This will lead to a desire to fit in to crowd will lead to individuals transitioning towards green technologies.
Benefits.
By addressing the main issue to the Building and Construction Authority(BCA), BCA can look into reviewing and reassessing their current action plan on the development of Green Buildings in Singapore. This, in turn, will allow BCA to adopt new strategies and implement new measures in building projects to align construction companies and subcontractors into working together to develop eco-friendly buildings. With this in place, BCA can look forward to a progressively increased rate of Green buildings being developed in Singapore. Developing more green buildings over the typical standing building is more beneficial as it improves sustainability, the environment and health of the people.
Although the initial cost of green building is costly, they are more economical to operate and maintain, making them an excellent long term investment. Secondly, green buildings also come with extensive environmental benefits where it uses reduced energy consumption, water conservation, lower emissions and reduced waste that will be invaluable to the battle against climate change. According to the straits time website, research on green buildings conducted by Wai (2017) and BCA showed that residents staying in green buildings are more productive and healthier. Survey results have also indicated that occupants were much contented with the indoor green building environment and setting over its counterparts.
With the ongoing development of green buildings in Singapore, BCA should also look into the option of redeveloping existing buildings and HDBs to be green mark certified. Doing so will help increase the pace towards achieving their goal of having an eighty-percent of the buildings in Singapore by 2030 to be green mark certified.
Evaluation. (In works)
In regards to the proposed solutions, our team has identified issues that could become a limitation.
Short informative videos, language barrier. Even though English is the national language here in Singapore, there is still a small percentage of Singaporeans that are weaker in their English language.
Collaborations between companies, technology providers and the government. Whether or not companies share the same enthusiasm towards the green movement is an indeterminable variable. With improved communications between the various parties, a stronger working relationship can be formed. However, the decision to integrate green technologies still lies with the companies stakeholders.
