Subject: Self-introduction

Dear Mdm Fazilah

I am Tan Yih Chyuan from Effective Communication Tutorial Class 3 (SIE 2016). I graduated with a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Ngee Ann Polytechnic in 2017. What drove me to Engineering was the question “Why?”, I have always been fascinated by how man and machines compliment on another to achieve remarkable feats through the advancement of technology and ideas. I chose Sustainable Infrastructure Engineer (SIE)(Land) as it was a multidisciplinary programme encompassing several fundamental engineering disciplines. And the Railway Engineering specialised curriculum will expose me to the various railway companies providing me with extra industry insights and unique opportunities.

One of my communication strengths would be confidence. It shows others that I believe in what I am saying and that I will follow through on it. Through National Service, I was able to work on my communication skills as it was vital in ensuring that jobs were done effectively and efficiently.

However, my weakness in communication would be nonverbal communication. I often fail to pay close attention to the nonverbal signals shown by the listener while having a conversation. At times I pay little attention to my own body language, not noticing my posture and hand gestures when I speak. Because of this, I face difficulties at times noticing how the listener really feels during or after the conversation.

My two main goals for this module is to firstly further improve on my nonverbal communication skills. To be able to pay close attention to the listeners signals so that I will be able to adjust accordingly to avoid misunderstandings or sounding aggressive. Secondly, during my studies in Ngee Ann Polytechnic, I felt that one of my weakness as a student was writing, specifically, using the right vocabulary. Therefore, my second goal would be to improve on my essay writing.

I would like to express my gratitude for taking the time to read my self-introduction.

Yours Sincerely
Tan Yih Chyuan

  1. Hi Bob,

I agree that with the advancement of technology in the recent years, it opens up endless opportunities and possibilities as an engineer. Engineers are now able to complete tasks more efficiently like using Autocad to draft and design railway linetypes compared to the demanding pen and pen in the past. That could also be the reason why we are taking up basic programming classes to stay relevant in the competitive field. Lets strive to improve ourselves during this module and give our best!

    Some edits you can make:
    1. Typo errors = man and machines compliment on"e" another
    2. Sentence Structure

    Yours Sincerely

  2. Hi Yih Chyuan! I think that your blog post is really well written! The sentence where u said how you were fascinated by how man and machines compliment each other is a statement I fully agree to. In SIE (Land), its is important to be able to see how man helps machines and vice versa.
I strongly believe that you can improve on your non verbal communication because you were able to describe clearly on what you had to work on.
The language of your blog post is close to perfect with minor errors that Jantzen has already pointed out.
Let's work together with our group and improve on our weaknesses while continuing to build up our other aspects of communication skills!

  3. Dear Yih Chyuan

Body language is 93% of what is communicated. Only 7% is verbal language.

I hope you will be more attentive to the non-verbal cues shown by others and by your own self whenever you are in a communication situation. It will make you a more effective communicator.

Best wishes in this module and at SIT!

    Kind regards
    Faz (Mdm)
